4x4, low range and diff lock on an ATV
What do 4x4, low range (L) and a differential lock do on an ATV, and when do you use them? Explained with the MEGA Blade 450 and 700.

Three terms come up often in ATV specifications: 4x4 drive, low range and differential lock. All three are about getting the vehicle through difficult ground. This article explains what they do and which MEGA models have them.
What is 4x4?
With 4x4, engine power goes to all four wheels. On low-grip ground such as mud, sand, loose soil or a steep climb, having all four wheels pull makes progress easier. On flat, firm ground, two-wheel drive is usually enough.
What does low range (L) do?
Low range lets the vehicle move at low speed with more pulling force. It is used for steep climbs, for keeping speed under control on descents and for towing. The L position on the MEGA Blade 700’s gearbox is its low range; the Blade 450 also has an extra low range.
Differentials and differential locks
When turning, the outer wheel travels further than the inner one. A differential lets the two wheels on an axle turn at different speeds so this can happen. But if one wheel slips or lifts off the ground, an open differential sends power to that wheel and the vehicle may not move.
A differential lock forces both wheels to turn together, so if one slips the other keeps pulling. Because steering on firm ground is harder with the lock engaged, use it only when needed and release it afterwards.
On MEGA models
- Blade 450: 4x4 drive, automatic gearbox with extra low range, front and rear locking differentials.
- Blade 700 4x4: push-button 4x4 and differential lock, P-R-N-H-L automatic gearbox, independent front and rear differentials.
4x4 is not among the specifications of our other ATVs (Kids ATV, Blade 200 and Blade 300). They are all compared in our ATV guide.
