What is EFI, and how does it differ from a carb?
What EFI means in motorcycle and ATV specs, how it works differently from a carburettor, and which MEGA models have it. A short, plain guide.

EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) is a fuel system in which the fuel going to the engine is metered and sprayed electronically. On many models EFI has replaced the carburettor, which was common on motorcycles for many years. This article explains how the two systems work and which MEGA models have EFI.
How does a carburettor work?
In a carburettor, the air drawn in by the engine creates a vacuum as it passes through a narrow throat. That vacuum pulls fuel through a jet and mixes it with the air. The mixture is set by the size of the jets and by mechanical adjustment.
How does EFI work?
With EFI, an electronic control unit uses readings from sensors, for example throttle position and air temperature, to work out how much fuel the engine needs at that moment. The fuel is sprayed under pressure through an injector.
What difference does it make to the rider?
- Adjustment: a carburettor may need adjusting by hand when conditions such as air temperature or altitude change; EFI adjusts the mixture itself from sensor readings.
- Starting: EFI engines usually start more easily in cold weather.
- Consistency: because fuel is calculated continuously, the engine runs more consistently across conditions.
Which MEGA models have EFI?
MEGA models with EFI in their specification:
- Blade 450: liquid-cooled 450 cc EFI engine, 4x4
- Blade 700 4x4: liquid and oil-cooled 700 cc EFI engine
- Spark 450X: twin-cam, liquid-cooled 449 cc EFI engine
Maintenance
With an EFI engine it matters to use clean, good-quality fuel and to follow the service intervals in the owner’s manual. Our own service team handles maintenance and repairs; the service line is 0533 844 01 05. Details are on the service page.
