Liquid-cooled vs air-cooled engines
How air, liquid and oil cooling work, how they differ, and which cooling system each MEGA model uses.

An engine produces heat as it runs, and that heat has to be carried away. Motorcycles and ATVs mainly use two ways to do this: air cooling and liquid cooling. In some engines the oil helps carry heat as well. This article explains the differences and how they apply to MEGA models.
Air cooling
An air-cooled engine has thin fins on the outside of the cylinder. As the vehicle moves, air passing over the fins carries the heat away.
- There is no radiator, water pump or coolant, so the design is simpler.
- There is no coolant to check.
- Cooling depends on air flowing over the engine.
Liquid cooling
In a liquid-cooled engine, coolant flows through passages inside the engine, picks up heat and carries it to a radiator, where the heat passes into the air. Many models add a fan to the radiator so air keeps flowing even when the vehicle is slow.
- Engine temperature stays more stable, especially under heavy load and at low speed.
- With a radiator, pump and coolant, the coolant level needs checking.
Oil cooling
Engine oil does more than lubricate; it also carries some of the heat. Some engines use this as part of their cooling.
Cooling on MEGA models
MEGA models with the cooling type in their specification:
- Air-cooled: Blade 200, Spark 250
- Liquid-cooled: Blade 300, Blade 450, Spark 450X (with fan and wide radiators)
- Liquid and oil-cooled: Blade 700 4x4
Which is better?
There is no single answer. Air cooling is simple and easy to maintain; liquid cooling keeps the engine at a steadier temperature in demanding conditions. We can help you work out which suits the way you will ride.
Maintenance reminder
On a liquid-cooled engine, check the coolant level as the owner’s manual describes. For questions, call our service line: 0533 844 01 05.
